A free fall in commodity and an unexpected jump in claims unemployment put financial markets on edge Thursday, dragging the stock market lower.
Stock indexes have fallen after the Ministry of labour, said that applications for the first time in unemployment benefits reached to 474,000 last week, the highest level in eight months. Forecasters could not see his entry. Economists had expected claims would fall to 410,000.
The Dow Jones index fell 139.41 points, or 1.1%, to close at 12,584.17.
The standard & poor 500 index dropped 12.22 or 0.9%, to 1,335.10.
The Nasdaq composite index dropped 13,51 or 0.5%, to 2,814.72
For the week:
The Dow Jones index is down 226.37 points, or 1.8%.
The S & P is 28.51, 2.1%.
The Nasdaq is 58.82 at 2.1%.
For the year to date:
The Dow Jones index is 1,006.66, or 8.7%.
The S & P is 77.46, or 6.2%.
The Nasdaq is 161.85, or 6.1%.
