How the major stock indexes fared Wednesday (AP)

Stocks closed Wednesday for the first day this week as oil... prices rising more offset worries about the global economic recovery. Oil rose nearly $ 2 to settle at $101.32 per barrel, pushing energy stocks higher.

Cabot oil and gas Corp. led the S & P 500, rising 7 percent. Increase in the price of copper, silver and other commodities raised miners and other hardware companies.

The Dow Jones index increased 38.45 points, or 0.3%, to close at 12,394.66.

The standard & poor 500 index increased 4.19, or 0.3%, to 1,320.47.

The Nasdaq composite increased 15.22, or 0.6%, to 2,761.38.

For the week:

The Dow Jones index is down 117.38 points or 0.9%.

The standard & poor 500 index is down 12.80 or 1 per cent.

The Nasdaq composite is down 41.94, or 1.5%.

For the year to date:

The Dow Jones index is 817.15, or 7.1%.

The S & P is 62.83, or 5.0%.

The Nasdaq is 108.51, or 4.1%.
