CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Observer in Charlotte said it will lay off 26 employees as the ongoing journal combat advertising revenue because of the precarious economy collapse.
On its Web site, the newspaper reported Monday the cuts are spread throughout the document, with four jobs lost in the press room. Editor Ann Caulkins also said that the company is freezing 25 vacant positions.
Caulkins said local advertising has improved, but the national accounts remain low.
The Charlotte Observer is part of McClatchy Co., based in Sacramento, California McClatchy also publishes The News & Observer of Raleigh and five newspapers in South Carolina.
The observer & News announced that it was cutting 20 jobs in all the staff, last week.
Charlotte and Raleigh newspapers also each cutting 20 jobs in January.
